Is Obama spiking the football?

What a rude host I am sometimes. I invite my friend Sam Bowlby to the WRKO studios for a couple of hours of radio fun and we lasted thirty minutes, bumped by the Red Sox game that would not end. The Celtics playoff pre-game show was starting on WEEI so baseball was headed to WRKO at 6:30pm.

Sam, you may recall, is a veteran of two tours in Iraq. He graduated in 2004 from Hamilton College, one of the nation’s finest, and instead of law or business school, he entered the Marines. Two tours in Iraq, then an MBA at Babson and some project work at Google, that’s what Sam had done when we last spoke. He’s now working on a part-time basis with The Program,

"The Program was founded in 2008 with the mission of providing high schools, professional and collegiate teams, and corporate organizations, with the best leadership and team building development in the country. Under the leadership of CEO and Founder Eric Kapitulik, The Program creates personalized leadership development training that challenges every member of YOUR team to get “that much better.”

So many times Bruce McQuain and I have spoken about the leadership qualities in the men and women featured in the Someone You Should Know segment. This is a great example of applying those skills in a unique and interesting way, challenging the big men on campus to step out of their comfort zone and truly learn about teamwork. Sam recently participated in training session a some major college football programs. My hat is off to those coaches who think outside the box. True leadership skills go far beyond the confines of the football field. Did I mention Sam was a football star at Hamilton College before entering the Marines?

After catching up a bit about his latest work, I had to ask Sam about President Obama’s trip to Afghanistan this week. I told Sam that I wasn’t bothered by Obama’s trip, or his interview with Brian Williams. Seeing as though George W. Bush landed a fighter jet on an aircraft carrier, I find it hard to complain about presidential triumphalism over Osama, right up until the Bill Clinton video this week, which was just awful. Sam’s perspective was different, for obvious reasons. It was an interesting discussion that we had to unfortunately cut short after thirty minutes.

I owe Sam a mulligan.

Frank Warren, founder of Post Secret

Hard for me to put into a few words how thrilled I was to welcome Frank Warren to Pundit Review Radio. Frank Warren is the man behind PostSecret.com. So what is Post Secret?
PostSecret is an ongoing community art project where people mail in their secrets anonymously on one side of a homemade postcard.
PostSecret
13345 Copper Ridge Road
Germantown, MD 20874, USA
A very simple idea that has led to some pretty amazing, moving and inspirational things. It has launched a massive community, the kind most social media companies can only dream about. In fact, Post Secret is the most trafficked advertising free website in the world. There are public events, books and now, even a play.

I’m happy to report that Frank was as cool, gracious and charming as he comes across in the video. It really was an honor for me to have nearly thirty minutes to talk with Frank about this amazing project. I read the site every Sunday, and five minutes on it can stay with me an entire week. I highly recommend you check out Post Secret.

UMASS Boston political science chair Prof Maurice Cunningham

We classed up the show last night by welcoming Professor Maurice Cunningham to the WRKO studio. While he may be the chair of UMASS Boston political science department, more important to us, he’s a terrific blogger, and yes, tweeter! In addition to some great columns for Commonwealth Magazine, Professor Cunningham writes at a great group blog, Mass Politics Profs.

We discussed the impact of blogging and social media and we also talked a lot about Massachusetts politics. The Senate race is setting up to be among the best in the nation. We also discussed Gov Patrick and his, in my opinion, pathetic response to the EBT scandal. Professor Cunningham has written a column on the EBT issue I highly recommend reading. Finally, we got around to former governor Romney’s and his quest for the White House.

It was a great to meet Professor Cunningham in person after reading him for so long in Commonwealth Magazine and on the terrific Mass Politics Profs blog.

Someone You Should Know: Staff Sgt. Trevor D. Tow

Bruce McQuain from Blackfive joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce spent 28 years in the U.S. Army and he is a veteran of the Vietnam war. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match.

This week Bruce told us about Staff Sgt. Trevor D. Tow. From the Army Times account,

With rounds from both enemy weapons flying by his head, body and feet and hitting the ground around him, Tow continued to fight in the open by himself. Another Ranger then moved into the open to fight alongside Tow, who shortly afterward killed one enemy fighter. The two Rangers then focused their fire on the second enemy fighter, killing him.
As the rest of the squad provided aid to Wright, Tow remained in the open. As he was providing security for his men, he saw a third enemy fighter moving toward them. That enemy fighter threw three grenades that landed as close as 10 feet away from Tow.

Tow continued to stand his ground, firing back at the insurgent. The two exchanged fire until Tow managed to kill the enemy.

The Someone You Should Know radio collaboration began as an extension of Matt Burden’s series at Blackfive. Bruce does an incredible job with the series every week. The SYSK archive can be found here and The Pundit Review Radio Podcast RSS feed can be found here and you can find us on iTunes at Pundit Review Radio.

Someone You Should Know: Major Mark E. Mitchell

Bruce McQuain from Blackfive joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce spent 28 years in the U.S. Army and he is a veteran of the Vietnam war. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match.

This week Bruce told us about a story you probably remember from the earliest days in Afghanistan, a prison revolt in which CIA agent Johnny Spann lost his life and the world became aware of John Walker Lindh, the wannabe jihadi.

As Bruce wrote at Q&O in 2006,

"Also there was Special Forces Major Mark E. Mitchell. MAJ Mitchell is the reason the revolt failed. For his action in quelling the revolt and defeating the rearmed Taliban prisoners, MAJ Mitchell was awarded the nation's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross"

Six years later, Bruce tells us in full, the story of Special Forces Major Mark E. Mitchell

The Reformed Broker, Joshua Brown, discusses Backstage Wall St

This was one of those weeks where I was chomping at the bit to get to WRKO. Joshua Brown is one of the premier financial bloggers, and for almost eight years (next month) my goal has been to bring the best of the blogs to the radio. We did that tonight. Josh’s blog The Reformed Broker is so good it has led to a column in Fortune Magazine, regular appearances on CNBC, and now, to his new book Backstage Wall Street: An Insider’s Guide to Knowing Who to Trust, Who to Run From, and How to Maximize Your Investments.

Sure, the book is about Josh’s career as a broker, during the decade which saw both 9-11 and the global financial meltdown. He provides great insight into the business, the pressure cooker and the conflicts (which is a polite way of saying working for the firm first instead of clients). After a certain point, Josh couldn’t bring himself to get out of bed, to push another investment product. He decided that the broker business was broken and he was done with it. Since that moment, his life has enjoyed a major renaissance. Today, he’s an independent, advising clients and worrying about their interests instead of generating trading profits for the firm. The book does a great job pulling back the curtain on an industry that has seen better days. For all the insight the book provides into the broker business, for me, this book was as much about doing what you love, following your passion and making it a career.

As a blogger, I LOVE success stories like Josh’s. Guys like him are why we launched this show, to share the insight and perspective of really smart, passionate subject matter experts. Outside of politics, no sector has been more impacted by the rise of new media as financial journalism.

Someone You Should Know: Staff Sergeant Ethan P. Killeen

Bruce McQuain from Blackfive joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce spent 28 years in the U.S. Army and he is a veteran of the Vietnam war. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match.

This week Bruce told us about
"Staff Sergeant Killeen’s heroic actions under effective enemy fire on the objective undoubtedly saved the lives of his squad, prevented the possible destruction of his platoon, and were instrumental in the death of three heavily armed, enemy combatants and a fortified machinegun position, two enemy commanders, including a district commander, and directly contributed to the removal of an enemy encampment and 14 EKIA. His actions changed the outcome of the battle."

Warren Wilkins, author of Grab Their Belts to Fight Them

When I heard this book was blurbed by Bing West, I said, “Say no more, just send me a copy”. Well, that was a good decision. I learned a ton about the Vietnam War reading this book. It is very much written from the perspective of the Vietcong, using an amazing amaount of original source material. The title, Grab Their Belts to Fight Them, had a double meaning for me after finishing the book. Obviously, it is a reference to close quarters, hand-to-hand combat. It also speaks to the Vietcong’s desire for decisive victory.

I was glad to have been introduced to this book and to have the opportunity to speak with author Warren Wilkins about it. Here is the overview from Amazon,

"In 1965, despite pronounced disadvantages in firepower and mobility, the Communist Vietnamese endeavored to crush South Vietnam and expel the American military with a strategy for a quick and decisive victory predicated not on guerrilla but big-unit war. Warren Wilkins chronicles the formation, development, and participation of the Viet Cong in the opening phase of the big-unit war and shows how the failure of that strategy profoundly influenced the decision to launch the Tet Offensive. Unlike most books on the war, this one provides an authentic account from the Communist perspective, with the author drawing on memoirs, unit histories, and battlefield studies to reconstruct the formation and deployment of major military units, battles and campaigns, and the strategic debates that informed the big unit war. Published in cooperation with the Association of the United States Army"

"Although wounded, Captain Chaney relentlessly continued to control actions on the objective ensuring that all structures were cleared of enemy personnel. His actions under fire were directly responsible for the killing of eleven enemy personnel, including a high-value foreign fighter that coalition forces had been chasing for over a year. His valorous leadership and successful elimination of these terrorists had a significant impact on Al Qaeda operations in the Samarra area and contributed immeasurably to the security of Salah ad-Din Province in Iraq. His actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military heroism and reflect distinct credit upon himself, the Special Operations Command Central, and the United States Army."

This week Bruce told us about Gunnery Sgt. Brian M. Blonder,

"Gunnery Sgt. Brian M. Blonder was awarded the Navy Cross, the second highest award given for valor in the face of danger, during a ceremony at the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Va., May 10, 2011. He was recognized for his bravery and outstanding leadership during an all-day firefight against Taliban insurgents Aug. 8, 2008, during the battle of Shewan, Afghanistan. Although he and the Marines and sailors he was fighting alongside with were outnumbered eight to one against insurgents, they managed to kill more than 50 insurgents and drove the rest out of their fortified fighting positions in the Taliban infested village in southern Farah province. Blonder, a reconnaissance Marine by trade, was serving as platoon sergeant with a force reconnaissance platoon attached to 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment. He was personally responsible for killing at least three Taliban combatants."

Legal Insurrection's William Jacobson

Anytime I can welcome Professor William Jacobson to Pundit Review Radio I feel as though we are delivering on the premise that launched this radio show nearly eight years ago, and that is to bring the best of the blogs to the radio. In addition to his work at Cornell law school, Professor Jacobson runs Legal Insurrection , a daily must read blog for me.

I invited Professor Jacobson to talk about a pretty amazing week for his blog. He wrote a post so compelling that it was the subject of Rush Limbaugh’s first ever tweet. We discussed the Limbaugh boycott at some length and then I took the opportunity to ask about an Executive Order Obama signed on Friday. Some people are going nuts online claiming some massive power grab, tyranny, etc and so on. Finally, we asked for his thoughts on SCOTUS taking up Obamacare, is there hope that they can put that monstrosity out of its misery for us?

Monster Hill author Dan Ferullo

Last night I welcomed local author Dan Ferullo to the WRKO studios for a discussion about his novel Monster Hill,

"It’s the early sixties, and the wife of Henry Sommers, the leader of the notorious Winter Hill Gang, is brutally murdered in her Boston hospital room, resulting in a gangland war lasting over thirty years and throwing a close-kit Irish family into a whirlpool of violence, deceit, and heartbreak."

This is a purely fictional story, not a Bulger-book (not that there’s anything wrong with that.:) Dan has a background in law enforcement and that contributes greatly to the overall character development. We’ve done a lot of author interviews over the years and one thing I’ve always been fascinated by is how they structure their stories, how they piece things together and develop the narrative. It is especially interesting when talking about fiction or a novel where the writers imagination controls all.

This book would be a great beach read, and since we seemingly have skipped spring, you can buy a copy at Amazon and learn more at the book web site here.

The Unseen Wound: Comprehensive PTSD Treatment

It was an honor to welcome Rick Collins, retired British Royal Marine, and founder of The Unseen Wound, to Pundit Review Radio. Recently Rick made the decision to dedicate his life to supporting our youngest combat veterans and Healing The Unseen Wound is a result of that commitment.

“The lessons learned from WWII, Korea and Vietnam are destined to be repeated unless we engage, educate and heal our young veterans as they return to civilian life”. “I understand what our young veterans are going through and we cannot sit around and wait for government to support them during these trying times. Our initiative is not a program of entitlement, it is a program of necessity if we are to reduce the levels of despondency among our next greatest generation”.

The Unseen Wound’s mission is the following,

"To provide recently separated combat veterans with a carefully managed program that will help them develop the professional, psychological and inter-personal skills needed to succeed in civilian life.

During their period of engagement with us, qualified veterans will receive skills training in recognized civilian trades, opportunities to serve in local and regional service projects, sustained esprit de corps with their fellow veterans and accredited PTS/Trauma support to address their mental health concerns.

We are a small team of military, business and medical professionals who have made the commitment to support our young combat veterans “one squad at a time”. We cannot do it without you."

Gregg Jackson returns to Pundit Review Radio

Book Review: We Won’t Get Fooled Again: Where the Christian Right Went Wrong

Gregg Jackson, old friend and co-founder of this show, returned to WRKO and Pundit Review Radio recently to discuss his new book, We Won’t Get Fooled Again. The book, co-authored with nationally syndicated radio host Steve Deace, does the following,

“We Won’t Get Fooled Again is an in-depth expose of the so-called Religious Right, the most reviled and feared voting bloc in the past 30 years of American politics. However, despite all of the attacks and the acclaim, there is little evidence the movement actually has accomplished any of its objectives, which is why Gregg and Steve sought out leaders in the movement to get their take on where the fight for righteousness in America went wrong. Readers will be agonized, traumatized, but also galvanized by what these Christian leaders have to say.”

Reading the book, I couldn’t help but remember back a few years ago, sitting in a hotel room in Florida with my family, watching Gregg emcee CPAC and introduce people like John McCain and George Will. What an accomplishment I thought. His first book was self-published and ended up in the Top 10 on Amazon political books and was praised by the likes of Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams. Big time right there. Sure, we had the radio show, but his book, the success and all the work that went into it, is what got him up there.

In this new book, I learned a few things I hadn’t known about that CPAC experience. I never realized how disappointed he was by the willingness of party leaders to compromise on core issues. Instead of the wonderful experience I had imagined it to be, it was something of an awakening. Gregg does not spare himself from criticism. He, and Steve as well, include themselves among those Christian conservatives who made too many compromises on core issues where there should have been bedrock conviction. I really liked this aspect of the book. The honesty, the confession almost. By seeing in themselves what they are criticizing in others, it gives the argument they are making real credibility. As do the numerous interviews with Christian conservative activists from across the country. Here’s a quote from JC Watts Jr., former (R) congressman from Oklahoma.

“In ‘We Won’t Get Fooled Again’, Steve and Gregg expose what I discovered long go, that there has been a conservative industry created. Consultants, pundits, media types and even some in the faith community use push button issues to drive us to the polls to vote for certain candidates to protect their deal. Conservative voters have to ask the tough question: ‘Are we moving the dial?’ This is a must read for every conservative voter and if you start reading it, you won’t want to put it down.”

Make no mistake about it, Gregg and Steve are looking for some absolutes in a world of compromise. They are asking Christian conservatives to follow their teachings and stand firm on Life issues, especially. They make no case for rigidity on tax policy or anything of the political realm. To me, it’s no different than a conservative Catholic like Rick Santorum believing that all Catholics should adhere to, and vote according to, the church’s teachings. I respect people who do that. I may not agree with it, but I respect it. What I have a problem with is when you start imposing your beliefs on others. This book does not do that. It is simply asking politically active Christian conservatives to take a fresh look at the movement, their beliefs and their politics. Are they in alignment?

For an outsider to the movement, to any movement really (RINO is not a movement as far as I know.:) I found the book fascinating. It is politics within politics. A similar argument or assessment is going on about the GOP in general, and the social con approach and the RINO, independent voter friendly approach. Sometimes, internal political battles are the most interesting.

Rep. Dan Winslow on lack of basic reform on Beacon Hill

Rep. Dan Winslow brings a ton of great experience to Beacon Hill, including 15 years involvement in local government, he served as a Judge at the Wrentham District Court and as chief legal council to Gov. Romney. He has hit the ground running on Beacon Hill, looking for people of good faith to reform our broken state government. How broke is it? Here’s the Globe on Lt. Gov. Tim Murray, and the broader @MassDems patronage problems,

But the larger system of alliance-building through state and municipal government, greased along by dubious fundraising and the awarding of patronage jobs, is a deeper threat to Massachusetts. Murray has rejected McLaughlin, but he and other elected officials need to be far more forthright in declaring that the system of rewarding political supporters with jobs is morally wrong, unfair to other applicants, and damaging to the credibility of the state government. It simply shouldn’t happen.

Among the most basic, commonsense reforms Rep. Winslow is pushing is Rule28.com. Called an election year ploy by the hopelessly arrogant and clueless Massachusetts Democratic Party, this measure simply allows a majority of representatives to demand that a bill get out of committee and brought to the floor for a vote. There are some brave Democrats involved in this. They are bucking a party that is against any diminishing of power that has been granted to Leadership, because we all know how well that has worked out with three Democrat speakers in a row who became felons. A simple majority means that the Democrats, given their huge advantage, could do this at almost any time. The fact that the Leadership is against it says everything. They don’t want to cede power to their own members. This has nothing to do with Republicans or politics, only maintaining the status quo.

We are up against it on Beacon Hill. We could use an Army of Dan Winslow’s up there.

Someone You Should Know: Lance Corporal Cody R. Goebel

Bruce McQuain from Blackfive joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce spent 28 years in the U.S. Army and he is a veteran of the Vietnam war. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match.

This week Bruce told us about Lance Corporal Cody R. Goebel. From his Silver Star citation,

"For seven minutes, he ignored his life threatening wounds and delivered devastating machine gun fire on the enemy’s position, all while refusing medical attention until he was properly relieved. Finally, but only after a fellow squad member had manned his machine gun, Lance Corporal Goebel moved 25 meters under his own power and under heavy fire across the observation post’s roof and down a 20-foot ladder to the casualty collection point. Upon reaching the ground, he collapsed due to the loss of blood and had to be carried to a helicopter landing zone for subsequent medical evacuation. His courage, heroism, and dedication to duty after sustaining a life threatening injury resulted in the successful blocking of an enemy attack and six enemy fighters killed. By his bold leadership, wise judgment, and complete dedication to duty, Lance Corporal Goebel reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service."

The Someone You Should Know radio collaboration began as an extension of Matt Burden’s series at Blackfive. Bruce does an incredible job with the series every week.

David Leavy and another side of the New Hampshire primary

I can’t think of the New Hampshire primary without thinking of my winter up there working as a volunteer. I was a senior at Colby College in 1992 and went with my friend and fellow political junkie David Leavy to volunteer. I worked for the Tsongas campaign and David went to work for the Clinton campaign.

My campaign, Tsongas’, may have won the primary, but I think the real winner was David! Within a few weeks, David had worked hard and made a great impression and he was invited to go to Little Rock to work on the campaign straight away after graduation in the spring. From there, he met DeeDee Myers, becoming her aide and eventually a White House staffer. David spent an incredible seven and half years in the White House pressure cooker, rising to be spokesperson for the National Security Council.

That amazing ride started as a volunteer working the phones and knocking on doors during the New Hampshire primary. Hard not to wonder about the young volunteers working up there right now who may end up working in the White House. The New Hampshire primary is more than an election, it is political theater and a great opportunity for voters to get up close to the candidates. It is also a great opportunity for people to get involved in the process, you never know what can happen!

One last point that made this interview so fun for me was getting another chance to thank David for giving me one of the greatest non-kid related experiences of my life, two consecutive afternoons in the West Wing, meeting with President Clinton in the Oval Office, watching the national radio address from the Roosevelt Room, walking the Rose Garden, briefing room, etc. It was just an incredible experience I will never forget and it was very gracious of David to make it happen.
It has been awesome to follow David’s career. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer person! He is currently Executive Vice President, Global Communications and Corporate Affairs for Discovery Communications. His current job looks almost as fun as his White House job!

Daily Caller's Matt Lewis on the New Hampshire Primary

In addition to being a rising star among conservative journalists in Washington DC, the Daily Caller’s Matt Lewis is about as nice a guy as you’ll ever meet. This segment was a ton of fun, because another guy who could not be nicer, WRKO morning host Todd Feinburg, checked in after attending a Chris Christie-Mitt Romney event. He and Tom Finneran will be broadcasting live from NH through Wednesday on WRKO.

It was great to welcome Matt back to the show, especially with the New Hampshire primary staring us in the face on Tuesday. Matt wrote one of the most interesting article’s of the weekend,

Tragedy of the conservatives: Why Romney’s wimpy foes are acting rationally.

"Don’t understand why Mitt Romney’s Republican opponents won’t lay a mitt on him? This started way back when Tim Pawlenty wouldn’t say “ObamneyCare,” but who could have imagined Romney would skate this long? It boggles the mind, but there are actually several good reasons why Romney continues to get a pass.

One way of explaining the phenomenon might be to compare it to “The Tragedy of the Commons, which Wikipedia describes as,

“a dilemma arising from the situation in which multiple individuals, acting independently and rationally consulting their own self-interest, will ultimately deplete a shared limited resource, even when it is clear that it is not in anyone’s long-term interest for this to happen.”

In this case, the conservative alternatives to Romney aren’t being selfish by overusing a shared resource — they are, instead, selfishly preserving their reputations."

It was great to get the chance to talk to him about this and so much more.
